iOS VPN Monitoring for Accountable2You - Setup Instructions

Accountable2You is very excited to now offer a monitoring solution to provide comprehensive monitoring for all web browsers on your iOS devices. This is a major step forward from the previous method of monitoring which required the use of a specialized browser.

Accountable2You accomplishes this by using an always-on VPN connection, which allows all of your internet activity, regardless of the browser used, to be monitored and reported to your accountability partners. In order to do this a certificate will be installed on your iOS device which contains the credentials necessary for establishing a secure VPN connection.

Your device will walk you through every step necessary in order to activate the VPN. This guide will also provide the same steps for your convenience.

Step 1: Enable VPN

For existing users, when you open the Accountable2You app, your screen will appear like in the first screenshot below. Click the "Setup" link to proceed to the next screen.

For users who are in the process of setting up the app for the first time, you have been automatically taken to the second screen shown below.

Click the "Enable VPN" button to proceed.

Step 2: Install the VPN Certificate

NOTE: Safari must be enabled on your device before you complete this step. If you have previously disabled Safari using iOS "Restrictions", please re-enable before proceeding.

On this screen, detailed instructions are provided for installing the certificate. After reviewing, scroll to the bottom and click "Install VPN Certificate".

The Safari app will open automatically. If you receive the message shown below, click "Allow".

Next, the certificate install screen will appear. Click "Install" in the top-right corner of the screen. You may also be prompted to enter your phone's security code.

Next, click the "Install" button that appears toward the bottom of your screen.

Your certificate is now installed. Click "Done" in the top-right of your screen.

You will be taken back to the Safari page that downloaded your certificate. Click the "Back to Accountable2You app" button to proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Trust the VPN Certificate

iOS 10.3 and higher requires that certificates be "trusted" in order to allow access to secure websites. This is an important step to ensure that your device's internet connection functions properly. (If your iOS is older than 10.3, the app will skip this step)

You will be presented with step-by-step instructions on how to complete this step. Apple does not allow us to take you directly to the Settings menu, so you must open the "Settings" app on your phone and follow the steps shown below. The VPN setup cannot continue until you complete this step.

Per the instructions, find your way to Settings -> General -> About -> Certificate Trust Settings.

Once there, move the slider next to "" to the "On" (Green) position. Once done, click the "AU Mobile" arrow in the top-left corner to be taken back to the app (or double-click the Home button and open Accountable2You).

Once you return to the Accountable2You app, Accountable2You will automatically detect that the certificate has been trusted and proceed to the next step.

Step 4: Finalize the Certificate Installation

The next screen that you see will ask your permission to add a VPN configuration to your device. Click "Allow" to proceed.

You will now receive a confirmation that the VPN has been successfully created and installed on your device. Click "Got it!" to finish.

That's it!

Your device is now using Accountable2You's VPN monitoring technology. You can use any browser that you choose.

You can verify at any time that the VPN is monitoring by opening the Accountable2You app, where you'll see "VPN Status: Connected" at the top of the app. You'll also see a persistent "VPN" logo at the top of your iOS screen to indicate that your internet traffic is going through the VPN.
